SEDA Speech and Debate Camp

We are excited to host our Speech and Debate Camp this summer.

In previous years, we have run week long in-person camps in Saskatoon and Regina, and two-week virtual camps open to students across the province. We are hard at work finalizing the 2022 iteration of this summer program.

We will announce details about the camp in May in our newsletter, on our website, and on social media.

We hope to see you there!

2022 E.C. Leslie Provincial Championship

The E.C. Leslie Provincial Championship was held online Mar. 12 & 13, 2022.

There were two prepared rounds on Saturday Mar. 12 and two impromptu rounds on Sunday Mar. 13.

We are happy to announce that we had a Francophone division this year with debaters participating from École canadienne-française - Pavillon Monique-Rousseau! Thank you/Merci M. Giroux for your passion, and inspiring your students.

This was our second Provincial Championship hosted online. The energy and enthusiasm of all the debaters jumped through the screens!

Thank you to all the debaters who participated.

Provincial Student and Volunteer Awards

The SHED Spirit of Debate Award is awarded to debaters of outstanding character who are role models and leaders within their clubs and the debate community. Nominees demonstrate integrity, sportsmanship, inclusiveness and an enthusiasm for debate and learning.

Elementary Spirit of Debate Award

Eddie Baron (Saltcoats School)

"Saltcoats School Debate Academy has never had a debater who is more deeply committed to his work as a debater. [...] [H]e embodies the ideals of sportsmanship and inclusiveness that are important criteria for this award. [...] [H]e is always quick to acknowledge the success of his peers and make room for others to participate[.]"

-Candice Baron, Saltcoats School Debate Coach

High School Spirit of Debate Award

Levin Wiebe (Swift Current Comprehensive)

"His enthusiasm for debate and superb critical thinking skills have inspired his teammates. [...] Levin also volunteered extra hours by judging in several SEDA elementary tournaments, thereby giving back to the debate community and encouraging young debaters to hone their skills."

-Mabel Derkson, Swift Current Comprehensive Debate Coach

The SEDA Youth Volunteer Awardrecognizes a high school member who has significantly contributed to the SEDA community through their volunteer service.

Louis Prince (École canadienne-française, Pavillon Gustave-Dubois)

"He has always had an extremely high motivation for debate and he helped me recruit other students in our team... Louis Prince took over as coach for the École canadienne High School. He publicised the club to recruit new students, organised [meetings] during lunch time, he [lead] activities to teach debate strategies, he asked parents to be judges for tournaments...He carried the debate club on his shoulders even though he had a lot of other responsibilities[.]"

-Bertrand Giroux, Vice-Principal École canadienne-française - PMR

The SEDA Meritorious Volunteer Award is given to a volunteer whose service goes beyond regular coaching/judging/hosting duties.

Hamza Saghir

"I am nominating Hamza Saghir for a Meritorious Volunteer Award for the 2021-22 season because of the high level of commitment he demonstrated by initially offering his help, then making a weekly commute to our location, [Caswell School], and following through with upbeat lessons and practice sessions. He was punctual, had high expectations of the students, and yet was responsive to individual debaters style and ability levels.

Hamza's passion for debate was evident at every meeting. He frequently shared with the students how much loved his time at Caswell and that he wants to show it by "giving back" to the school and to the debate community. He told them that he was passing the torch onto them; that they can continue to grow in debate and then find ways to pay it back by volunteering and contributing to other new young debaters some day, to keep the cycle going.

For these reasons, and to properly recognize how much time Hamza went out of his way to give to the debate community, I believe that he is an excellent candidate for this Award."

-Susan Lutkin, Caswell School Debate Coach

Thank you Judges!

Thank to all the volunteer judges who make it possible to for us to host debate events.  A special shout-out goes to those volunteers who judged four or more times this season!

Thank you for spending your Saturdays helping us create a space for youth to discuss complex and difficult topics through debate.

National and International Debate

The International Competition for Young Debaters (ICYD) will be held April 23, 2022 as a hybrid event, with some students competing online, and some in-person in Oxford, England.  Joti G & Samuel W. from Walter Murray Collegiate qualified for this international event!

We wish Joti and Samuel luck as they compete against young debaters from across the globe.

The Team Canada Try Outs will be held May 27 to 29, 2022.  SEDA held a qualifier for the event on February 26, 2022. Three Saskatchewan students will be attending the national tryout: Rafay A. (Walter Murray Collegiate), Isabelle M. (Bedford Road Collegiate), and Will S. (Centennial Collegiate).  The Team Canada Try Outs qualify students to become part of Team Canada and compete at the international World Schools Debating Championship.

Good luck!

The Senior High National Championship is open to students in grades 9 to 12 and will be held online April 29 to May 1, 2022. We have notified teams who have qualified for this event.

The Junior High National Championship is open to students in grades 7 to 9 and will be held in late May. Once we have received details from the national organizers, the qualified teams will be notified.
