The Canadian Junior nationals debate competition was a great, fun, and informative experience for me! I never thought I would even come in the first half of the 88 speakers which is highly motivational. My most challenging motion was the prepared one on Canadian Federal proportional representation of which I knew nothing about, as I didn’t know anything related to elections, so had to do a lot of reading and SEDA coaching helped a lot! Out of 4 impromptu rounds, my favorite motion was allowing tent encampments for homeless people in public spaces and we were [side] proposition- we developed ideas and spoke of [things] which we even never thought before. I think this competition has made me learn different provincial styles of debating and helped me adapt some more debate skills that I can carry on for the future tournaments. Thank you SEDA. -Durga A. |

The Saskatchewan team enjoyed a visit to Granville Island for sightseeing and some improv comedy, and enjoyed great Richmond food during the team sushi supper. The Lego store and diverse food court in the local mall were also popular. There were two rounds on the prepared motion, this house supports the development of a public private healthcare system, on the Friday night. The teams were least happy with those rounds. By Saturday morning, everyone was excited about the impromptu round motions. On Sunday morning, we were excited to learn that [two Saskatchewan] teams had broken into the finals with a single loss in regular rounds. The quarter finals motion was this house supports the use of civil disobedience as a dominant form of protest. |

Semi-finalists Will & Lucas (pictured) finished as 19th and 15th speakers. |

Both Lucas and Will, and, Sahasro and Isabelle, won their quarter-final rounds and faced each other in the semi-finals on a topic neither team had a lot of “spec” [specific knowledge] on: this house believes scoring in artistic sports should heavily prioritize technical elements over artistic interpretation. Despite Lucas’s impressive basketball references, Isabelle and Sahasro won the semi-final and moved on to the final round. The final motion was, this house, as Canada, would militarise the Northwest Passage. Isabelle and Sahasro won the final, and are the 2024 Senior National Champions. Saskatchewan is also delighted to have [four] debaters in the top twenty speakers. Will was 19th and Lucas was 15th. Sahasro was 8th and Isabelle, who is a current member of Team Canada, was the top speaker nationally for 2024. Everyone learned lots from the chance to debate the top teams in Canada, and the coaches are very proud of such an exceptionally strong result. -Wendy J., Senior Nationals Teams Coach |
