Spotlight on Students

The Speech Competition was a great learning experience, and from what I know, a great experience for all the students who participated. It teaches students how to read fluently, understand, comprehend, and present a book. The Speech Competition also does this in a fun way for students. The competition also teaches kids how to persuade people formally in a speech. The finals for the Speech Competition was very interesting, as students were given 3 topics to choose from, and write a speech about the chosen topic all in 10 minutes. This impromptu-style speech helps children think critically{...}

Tournament Motions & Results

Tournament 6: Society & Culture

This high school National Style tournament was held Jan 15, 2022.

A values motion is more about being a thought experiment, than it is about passing a new law or banning a harmful substance. This tournament, “Philosophy and Culture”, was characterised by those types of motions. For example, the first motion of the tournament:

“This house prefers a world without the concept of fate and destiny.”

Debaters were forced to construct an alternate world and illustrate to the judges why it would be better or worse in comparison to the one we live in. This was a powerful exercise in critical thinking that allowed the debaters to focus more on developing the most persuasive arguments, rather than make sure they had the best statistics to back up their case.

The motions for round two and three were this house regrets the societal belief that one should strongly identify with the culture of one's ancestry and this house would ban athletes from expressing thier political views.
