Tournament 4 was originally scheduled to take place at Luther College High School in Regina. Due to heavy snowfall and an abundance of caution, the event was moved online. We had students in grades 7 to 12 in three divisions: intermediate, novice, and open. Elementary Motions: - Prepared: As Saskatchewan, this house would prioritize the development of nuclear power
- Impromptu: This house would eat bugs/insects. In general, insects are rich in protein and low in carbohydrates, and contain essential minerals including iron, zinc, calcium, and magnesium
High School Motions: - Prepared: This house, as the Democratic Republic of Congo, would nationalise its resources.
- Impromptu: Assuming a world where superheroes exist, TH, as the United Nations, would regulate their engagement in conflicts.

On November 30, we held our largest speech tournament yet with over 20 participants in grades 6 to 12. Examples of some of the topics chosen for the two prepared speech categories are: Persuasive speech topics: climate change, the use of AI in art, sexism in sports, indigenous identity in the media, the importance of libraries, and wooden chairs in classrooms. Interpretive reading selections: Anne of Green Gables, Matilda, Leave no Trace, Casey at the Bat, Great Expectations, and The Yellow Wallpaper. The finalists moved on to the impromptu speech round. Each speaker was given three topics and had to select one to speak on for 3 to five minutes. Some of the topics chosen included: the best type of pet, if I had three wishes, success in life is..., is failure more valuable than success, Instagram, and space exploration. |
