Spotlight on Debaters

I had a great time at debate camp. My instructors, Isabelle and Will, were incredibly enthusiastic and taught me a lot. It was great to exchange ideas with like-minded people, and I had a lot of fun on debate day. We had many debates and enjoyed a delicious pizza lunch and treats. All in all, the camp was a fun and engaging experience that helped me improve my debating skills.

During one of the many games played, a student threw a ball, hitting a tall window curtain. A bat flew out from the curtain and circled the room. Much to the surprise of the instructors, the students were not scared of the bat. Rather, the instructors had to stop the kids from wanting to get closer to inspect it…Debaters are a curious group!

The bat disappeared, either finding a new sleeping spot, or out the open window.

SEDA Debate Camp ran from July 24 to 28 at Albert Community Centre in Sasaktoon. Despite the incredible heat that week, both the campers and instructors had fun and learned lots! We had 39 campers, 6 Instructors and 1 camp director.

We would like to thank Dishita (Camp Director), Will, Isabelle, Sanjana, Abhinav, Lucas, and Samuel for creating an engaging camp, and spreading their passion for debate.

Debate Day to practice a fun round of debate!

Speech and Debate Academy

Speech & Debate Academy (SDA) is an after-school program where youth have an opportunity to learn and practice public speaking and debate skills. They will be encouraged to express their own opinions in thoughtful and creative ways.

Classes are available for students in Grades 5 to 10.

To increase accessibility, classes are available both in-person and online.

Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting is an important part of the governance cycle of SEDA.

It is an opportunity for the board to share the challenges and successes of the organization and hear from its membership. The membership will vote on:

motions brought forward,
appointments to the Board of Directors,
review audited financial statements, and
elect auditors for the new year.

There will also be an opportunity for dialogue with members at the AGM.

For the purposes of the AGM only clubs with paid memberships can vote.

Our AGM will be October 16, 2023.

National Seminar

Annually, the Canadian Student Debating Federation holds the National Debating Seminar. The seminar aims to expose students to the art of debating while providing an opportunity for cultural exchange between young people from all regions of the country. Delegates attend debate and thematic workshops, debate in practice rounds critiqued by experienced coaches, and wrap it up with a fun tournament. Seminar is about educational debate, non-competitive debate. C.S.D.F. embraces both of Canada’s official languages, offering students the opportunity to attend the Seminar as English, French or Bilingual delegates.

The 2023 Seminar was held in August in Toronto. High school SEDA members Lila, Shirin, and Jessie attended.

We would like to thank Bertrand Giroux who volunteered his time as a chaperone for this event.

[National Seminar] gave me a great opportunity to develop my debating skills and grow for the upcoming debate year. The Saskatchewan team did exceptionally well and I am proud to have been a part of it. It was truly an incredible experience and I am so thankful to have been able to attend it. I hope I can attend more opportunities such as this one in the future!

2023 Tentative Competition Schedule

Tournament registration opens on our website two weeks before the tournament date and closes one week before the tournament date. Each competing student needs to complete a registration form.

We are working with coaches & schools to determine our ability to host in person tournaments. If a location it listed as TBD, that means 'to be determined.' We will confirm event locations as soon as possible on the event pages.
