2024 E.C. Leslie Provincial Debate Championship |

|
Dear SEDA Members, Parents, and Community Around this time of year, the excitement is palpable as we lead up to the Provincial Championship. This year is no different, and we were excited to send out the invitations this past week. As has quickly become the norm, this year’s event will be a hybrid two-day event, March 15 – 16, 2024. This format is especially designed to accommodate travelling teams, and busy work schedules. We look forward to hosting you online on Friday March 15 for the prepared rounds, and on Saturday March 16 in person at Aden Bowman Collegiate in Saskatoon for the impromptu rounds and catered banquet. We also look forward to having our second year with an impromptu Open Final. Together with the staff, Lindsay and I have been hard at work planning for the event. We can’t wait to see you there! -Fiseko Musonda, Executive Director We would love community members and alumni to join us as volunteer judges. Friday rounds are from 5:00 – 9:00 PM and Saturday rounds are from 12:00 – 5:30 PM. |
Annually, we bestow awards to members and volunteers who have shown unparalleled enthusiasm and commitment to debate. The descriptions of the various awards are noted below: The Spirit of Debate Award is given to one elementary debater and one high school debater of outstanding character who are role models and leaders within their clubs and the debate community. Nominees demonstrate integrity, sportsmanship, inclusiveness and an enthusiasm for debate and learning. The SEDA Youth Volunteer Award recognizes a high school member who has significantly contributed to the SEDA community through their volunteer service. The SEDA Meritorious Volunteer Award is presented to a volunteer whose service goes beyond regular coaching/judging/hosting duties. The McLeese Service Award is awarded to a volunteer who have served SEDA over the course of many years and made outstanding contributions to the debate community. Student members can nominate someone for the the Spirit of Debate Awards. All other award nominations must come from coaches, SEDA staff, or board members. Information on how to nominate has been emailed. Nominations will close March 1, 2024. |

| I started in debate when I was approached by the coach of my school. Our coach knows that I struggle with public speaking and I am very shy. I even struggle talking in front of my teammates. My coach has been very supportive and encouraging to help develop my confidence Debate has taught me to think about my conversations before I start speaking. I feel more confident now when having differing opinions with classmates and friends. -Sarah P |

Tournament 6 was held virtually on January 20. This tournament had all impromptu motions. This means students only had 30 minutes to prepare for each motion. Round 1 Motion for All Divisions: This house believes that if you find money on the ground, its automatically yours to keep. Round 2 Elementary Motion: This house believes all Saskatchewan schools should teach cooking. Round 2 High School Motion: This house opposes the use of virtual fashion models. Round 3 Elementary Motion: This house believes it is better to be the sidekick than to be the superhero. Round 3 High School Motion: This house, as the writer, would opt for the unhappy ending in which systemic and societal injustice prevails |

Thank you to the Centennial Debate Club coaches for helping us host Debate Tournament 8 on February 10. "The tournament was a great learning experience. Everyone showed great sportsmanship and the atmosphere was inviting. The judges did a great job at giving feedback as well." -Grade 11 Student Elementary Prepared Motion: This house would abolish the Olympic Games. High School Prepared Motion: This house believes that capitalism will not be the dominant economic and political system in 100 years. All divisions Impromptu Motion: This house believes travelling back in time is better than travelling forward in time.
